I don't care about it. This:
Equals this:
And much fun was had by all. Yes, one session takes 1/4 tank.

You were moving man. What was the point of revving it only in whatever gear you were in on the pit straight ?

Thanks! Slow to warm up, but by about 10ish minutes I'm at full tilt. 2.25mi in about 1:48. Not bad =)
And yeah - 2nd gear on pit lane. Just to clean off the tires and get a little bit of heat into the brakes. I'm not sure how much of a difference it makes, but an instructor (who has an E92 M3 race car) suggested that I do it, so it has become a bit of a ritual as much as anything else.

What track are you at? I'm sure you probably posted that on the youtube link but I want Oppo to get my web traffic.

Indeed I did, but no worries. Track was New Jersey Motorsports Park - Thunderbolt circuit. I was there with the BMW CCA. That run was filmed first thing (like 9:30am) Tuesday morning (6/3) before the track got too hot and greasy.

Hopefully I can buy my wife the Audi allroad she wants within the next year and then get away with finally buying a track toy. Nashville apparently has a racetrack they open up to events quite often.

If you're going to be new to tracking my advice is to get something slow, cheap and reliable that has a manual transmission and a good aftermarket, and that you won't have to rely on for daily transportation. The E46 non-M models are starting to fall into that category. The E90 M3 is a hell of a car, but it's not the best to learn with because it's powerful, heavy and expensive. Its handling limits are sky high and the penalty for messing up is baaaaaad. If you really want to learn car control, it's better to spin at 50mph than at 80. Don't get me wrong, I love driving my car on track but an older, track-only toy would probably fit my needs better at this point, whether it be a full race car or weekend warrior. Live and learn!

Was thinking s2000 (not a vtec fanboy) as track toy, and then maybe after that e39 as a daily driver until the end of time. But right now I gave my wife my Disco 2 and took her Nissan pickup with a quarter million miles. Can you say "Yay" for trying to live debt free?
![]() 06/05/2014 at 14:35 |

I can indeed. Debt free is the way to be! The S2000 would be a great track car, but you should decide which organizations you think you'd like to run with before you pick one up and check their rules because some (like the BMW CCA) won't allow convertibles. Also you should probably act fast, I think people are realizing the prices for the S2K are a steal right now =)
The E39 is a fantastic car. It's comfortable, has plenty of power for a daily driver and there are lots of them around with 3 pedals. They're also not that bad to maintain, assuming you're handy enough (and I'm guessing you are if you own as Disco) to do some things yourself. My friend had one recently, all black with the M5 bumper. It looked great. He got rid of it for an E46 coupe though - wanted something a bit sportier!

The goal is to find an actual e39 M5, I have loved that car since it's debut in Motor Trend with the other super saloons. That sucks because i here the BMW CCA is quite possibly the best group to join. Is there any wiggle room if I put on a real deal rollbar and hardtop?

A friend of a friend just bought an E39 M5 for $11,000. The guy was going to part it out because no one wanted it with the mileage it had, so my friend bought it and is slowly fixing all the little problems so he can track it. It has 240,000 miles on it! I sat in it and checked it out pretty thoroughly, though I haven't driven it. If you had asked me before I knew the mileage what I thought it had on it I would've said 100k, tops. 240 is insane, and so is a near-perfect M5 for 11 grand. Lucky guy.
About the convertible thing, it's really hard (almost impossible, it seems) to track one with my chapter of the club unless it's a full-blown race car. http://www.delvalbmwcca.org/DrivingSchool/… Check out the "Convertible Car Participation Requirements" PDF. Such a bummer.

Absolutely lucky man, wish I had that kind of liquid right now and had more friends here in Nashville. I used to sell cars in Memphis, so my connections there are for beaten up rental fleet cars, trucks and SUVs, or beat to shit former performance oriented vehicles. I had an inspection for things that I needed to replace or service and there was a 2000 one getting some minor work done (oil leak, power steering leak) from a local car dealership listed online for i think 13k, slightly over a hundo on the miles. I could not justify that right now even though I so want to. Debt free is nice but man does it suck paying cash for everything.

I think that living within one's means is its own reward, although it certainly doesn't seem like much compared to the typical American lifestyle of frivolously spending borrowed money. It'll be nice to own an M5 when you don't have to worry about random maintenance costs AND a car payment at the same time.

Agreed, I just hope that they aren't all either 40k over-priced (Looking at you Enthusiast Auto Group) or completely dogged out by some stance nation dubstepper.

In the mean time I will continue to enjoy car shows and other people track day videos.

You should join the BMW CCA, go to their local events and meet people and then go to a track day and get a ride along with an instructor in the instructor's car. CCA dues are 48 bucks a year, and you get a cool magazine every month. Some local chapters are more active than others, but I believe most do have track events!

There ya go! Racecar dudes love to have cool pictures of their cars! I sure wish I had more pictures of my car on track. There was a "company" there shooting but they want like 30 bucks to burn a few pictures onto a CD. Blah.

Yeah no, not gonna charge people like that. Protein bar/protein shake, and possibly a ride along. Would they accept a military combat kevlar helmet as suitable protection?

No, but they always have loaner helmets. =)

Ha sweet. Before I started thinking semi-reasonably, I wanted an 02 M coupe as my track car, and 03 M5 LMB for my daily, and my Disco 2 completely finished for overlanding.

Incredible combo! Reasonably-shmeasonably, you should go for that!
